Lessons for the Week of 1-21-13

Letter -- Capital and lowercase Uu, producing the Uu sound, how to print Uu correctly using printing lines, and blending/chunking words with Uu.  Review of Letters Aa-Tt.

Reading- How to read using sight words, letter sounds, and picture clues.  How to read using word families and rhyming clues.  We use various reading strategies on a daily basis and you should use them at home when reading the Literacy book.  Reading strategies include using letter sounds to sound out, using digraphs (sh, oo, ch, th), using sight word knowledge, chunking words, using rhyming clues, etc.

Writing- We have begun to write sentences using our sight words and letter sounds.  I expect students to make spaces between words and use capitalization and punctuation.  I also expect students to use the printing line to have awesome handwriting in the classroom and on homework!. Please encourage your child to take their time and have neat handwriting on their homework!

Literacy- Students are bringing home a Literacy Reading Log to be signed nightly (Monday through Thursday).  This will help track who is reading with their child.  If your child brings home a literacy book in a colored bag, PLEASE return the book in the bag the next day. I cannot give a child a new book until the previous one is returned.  Children are grouped for Literacy by their reading ability.  Your child must learn sight words and apply their "sounding out" knowledge in order to move on to more challenging books.

Math- Calendar Time (months, days, tallying, patterns, odd/even, birthdays, positional words, sizing words, place value (ones and tens), skip counting, and more!), counting numbers to 20 (and beyond), counting to 20 from any given number, writing numbers to 20, ten frames, how many more to make ten?, fluency in fact families, positional words, etc.

New Unit: 2D and 3D shapes

Technology: learning how to navigate www.starfall.com and how to use a mouse and laptop -- If any student does not respect the computer/headphones or their partner, they will be sent back to their seat to work on an individual project.
